Interview with Ultra Light Startups founder, Graham Lawlor

Ultra Light Startups gives Twitter-Based businesses owners a chance to show off their skills in front of a large crowd and get some invaluable advice from fellow business people. As part of Internet Week 2009, the founder of Ultra Light Startups, Graham Lawlor told us how his company continues to grow.

What led to the creation of Ultra Light Startups?

Graham: After ten years of working on Wall Street, I finally realized that working for big companies was not my destiny. I wanted to start my own tech company while I was finishing up my graduate degree in economics.

How much funding did you get for the project?

Graham: I actually wanted to avoid seeking external investments, so with all technology around us, I realized I could start a company with very little overhead.

When did you actually launch your business?

Graham: May 1st, 2008. I sent out Facebook invitations for the first meeting and about 15 people showed up. I decided to buy pizza for everyone and it cost me about 80 bucks. Some entrepreneur I am - - - I decided that night to start charging a slight entry fee for each meeting.

And your business has continued to grow with each passing month?

Graham: Well tonight (Thursday) we had a little more than 130 people, that’s the biggest turnout we’ve had yet. We seem to grow by about 15 business owners each month. For a while, all of our meetings were held in New York, but the model has done so well, we have continued to add additional cities. Just recently we added meetings in London and Boston and are also planning on adding another meeting later this month in Boulder, Colorado.
