Web TV Producers Toolbox Recap for Internet Week 2009
Web TV is so huge right now that everyone is trying to figure out how to make it work. But you don’t have to be Tim Gunn to know that creating your own content is as easy as reading this blog. The New York Television Festival, in partnership with Tilzy.TV and For Your Imagination presentThe Web TV Producers Toolbox today at the For Your Imaginaton offices. The placed was packed with online show producers and those looking to create them. This panel peeked by interest because I’ve always wanted to produce my own online podcast and this was a great way to get more information about what works online with web video and what doesn’t.
On the panel was panelists includes Craig Engler, SVP and GM of Sci-Fi Digital, Adam Eland, Executive Producer of CBS Interactive and co-Founder of Bright Red Pixels, Dan Goodman, President of MRC Digital, Jonathan Stern, Writer and Producer of Wainy Days and Children’s Hospital, Nikol Hasler, Creator of Midwest Teen Sex Show and Gavin McGarry, Principal of Jumpwire Media. The panel was hosted by Paul Kontonis, CEO of For Your Imagination, and Jamison Tilsner of Tilze.TV.  Then panel focused on the current state of web TV, the production of web TV, and the distribution and montiziation of web TV. And most people really wanted to know how to could make money from producing online shows.
We chatted with Paul Kontonis, Adam Eland, and Ned Canty, Festival Director for the New York Television Festival, and they all agreed that right now most people who want to produce TV on the web need to be in the space because they love production and creating their shows and getting their point of view heard. If your a content creator find a niche that doesn’t have a voice online and give that audience a means to share, discuss, and view content around that subject. Even if you have a good 10,000 followers you can build a nice audience and eventually make money from that niche traffic. But if you want to be in the Web TV game you have to know that a lot of people are still trying to figure out how to make it profitable. You just have to keep your creativity high and work on projects that you love!
